ChannelAdvisor is looking for a new SQL Server Database Administrator to join our amazing DBA team. We push SQL Server to its limits, enabling some of the largest retailers in the world to sell as much as they can online. If you like solving complex and unique problems, and like working on high performance systems, this position might be for you! 


As a member of our DBA team, you will have the following opportunities:

  • Work with the latest versions of SQL Server, often prior to official release dates
  • Tune highly transactional SQL workloads on some of the fastest hardware available
  • Get hands-on experience with advanced SQL Server features like In-Memory OLTP, Query Store, and Distributed Availability Groups
  • Have the help and support of an outstanding team of fellow SQL Server database professionals working across teams at ChannelAdvisor, including MVPs and established SQL Server community members (and just all-around smart folks)


The day-to-day tasks of the DBA team can vary, but here are a few of the typical projects you might be working on:

  • Troubleshooting query performance issues
  • Building/patching/upgrading SQL Server instances
  • Building internal tools for the DBA and Database Engineering teams
  • Designing and building automation tasks to improve the stability and integrity of our database platform, and to make everyone’s jobs easier
  • Researching new technologies and approaches to solve current and future issues
  • Working on cross-team projects to ensure database stability, integrity, and availability
  • Improving our internal monitoring and alerting platform
  • Having fun with, and learning from, a great team of engineers


We have a wide variety of personalities on the team with a culture of sharing and learning. We are looking for someone who isn’t afraid to bring their whole self and share their ideas, and someone who loves to learn new things.

While the requirements are flexible, we are looking for experience in some of the following area:

  • 3+ years in an OLTP database administration role working with SQL Server 2014 or higher
  • Proficient doing most of the basics of database administration (backup/restore, performance tuning, configuration, high availability, security)
  • Using PowerShell to automate administrative tasks, and preferably experience writing custom functions
  • Working with software development teams
  • Working with SQL Server in a cloud environment


Beyond that, we would be extra excited if you had any experience in the following areas:

  • Maintaining at least dozens (although ideally hundreds) of SQL instances in a production environment
  • Designing, implementing, and testing a disaster recovery plan
  • System administration on Windows and/or Linux
  • Virtual environments like VMWare
  • Implementing and troubleshooting transactional replication
  • Using other data platforms such as MySQL, Elasticsearch, InfluxDB, or Redis
  • Automation using Azure Devops pipelines
  • Configuring and maintaining complicated HA configurations such as distributed availability groups

With your manager, you’ll decide on a schedule and work location that sets you up for success.  You can choose to work in the office of your assigned location, your home office or both. And if things change, no problem.  Just work it out with your manager.
